Whats is El Camino?
The Camino de Santiago (English: the Way of Saint James), is a network of pilgrims’ ways leading to the cathedral of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia in northwestern Spain, the shrine of the apostle Saint James the Great in where the remains of the saint are buried.
The Camino Today
The Camino is very popular in modern times – it was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993, and in 2010 a movie about the Camino – called The Way – starring Martin Sheen was released.
In 2018, almost 330.000 pilgrims reached Santiago de Compostela – a combination of those who walked the French Way, the Northern Way (along the north coast of Spain), the Portuguese Way (from Lisbon), the English Way (from Ferrol in Galicia), the Camino Primitivo (from Oviedo in Asturias) and the Vía de la Plata (from Seville in Andalusia).
