Mures and Olt

Mures and Olt is a folk legend. It tells the origin of two of Romania’s most important rivers, the Mures and the Olt. It is an interesting fact that the sources of the two rivers are very close to each other, but they flow in completely different directions. The legend can be found in both Romanian and Hungarian folklore.

Mures and Olt is a story about two brothers who had very different characters. That is why they were quarrelling all the time. Their mother, who was a fairy sent them to the world to find their father. In order to travel easily she turned them into rivers. Against their mother`s advice they chose different routes. The story is a good example of the importance of solidarity.
